Born and raised in New Jersey, Norma whose interest in everything led her to several areas of expertise and a diverse career path. As a former teacher, Norma has always embraced new career challenges and risen to ever increasing levels of proficiency and organization oversight. Her career path includes work as an Account Executive and Usability Engineer at Merrill Lynch; as well as Instructional Designer, Systems Trainer and Director of Diversity Programs for Verizon Communications.

During her tenure at Verizon, Norma created leadership and technology mentoring programs in Washington, D.C., New Jersey, and Maryland. She currently serves as the Vice Chair for Girls In Technology (GIT) Loudoun County . In early 2012, while visiting the White House to discuss technology initiatives, Norma decided it was time to accelerate her life’s dream of introducing and mentoring more girls to STEAM careers by bringing visionary and like-minded professionals together to support STEAMd initiatives.

Norma holds a Master’s degree in Instructional Technology and two Bachelors’ degrees in Psychology and Management Science. She currently resides in Virginia and is the happily married mother of two fantastic young adult males. Norma says, “Now, it’s all about developing the girls!”

As a management professional with over 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, Karen focused her work in the S.T.E.A.M. career path. Karen has received distinctions in International Program Management and Product Development while living and working in Latin America.

Jianyi Zhuo

is a young professional dedicated to helping the community. She especially enjoys working with the kids and helping kids grow their individualities. Jianyi is the director of JEI Learning Center Ashburn that helps kids Pre-K through 9th grade with English and math. She worked in public accounting for several years before opening her learning center in 2016. Jianyi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from George Mason University.

Kristen Wilson

is a strong proponent of education. Kristen believes that education provides the opportunity for women to obtain financial and professional independence, and early education sparks the interest in young girls to find their true passions.  Kristen is a commercial real estate attorney, representing Landlords and developers in commercial real estate transactions. Throughout her career, Kristen has developed relationships with several influential women who have provided mentorship and created opportunities for her to explore and find her passion. As a Board Member of STEAMd, Inc., Kristen believes it is her obligation to help young women find their passions and develop them into our future business leaders.

Alicia Booker

Alicia Booker

hails from Orange, New Jersey. She earned her Master’s in Counseling at Montclair State University and Bachelor’s in English from Rutgers University. Much of her early career was in higher education where she served as a counselor, administrator and adjunct professor. Currently Alicia is the Director of Program Implementation at Thanks Again, LLC, where she leads the engagement and management strategies at over 170 airports across the country.

In addition to all of the above, Alicia is a writer and aspiring Personal and Executive Life Coach.

Cynthia Johnson Harvey

believes that young girls need encouragement to develop an early, strong foundation in S.T.E.A.M. and that STEAMd Inc. is exactly the vehicle to prepare girls for a brighter future in STEAM careers. Cynthia serves as the Treasurer of STEAMd, Inc.

During the course of her professional career, Cynthia has managed financial organizations for several Fortune 500 Companies. After retiring, she followed her heart and began work with a number of Non-Profits: teaching English as a second language, providing help and hope for the homeless, and working as an Election Officer.

Kim Simmons

Kim Simmons

was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey and is a graduate of Roberts-Walsh School of Business. Kim is married and works in ministry alongside her husband and their three amazing children. As an ordained minister, Kim was the Director of Women’s Ministries at her church for more than 10 years. Kim is excited and honored to be a board member at STEAMd, Inc. as she believes deeply that empowerment is one of the most important tools of life.  Kim has recently returned to her studies, matriculating towards her Bachelor of Science in Sociology.

Cydney Shields Ferrell

is an author and IT professional who, since her college years, has spent her life uplifting and mentoring youth. She has been a big sister, youth advisor, mentor, and career coach.  As an advocate for girls pursuing S.T.E.M. careers, she has extensive experience in showing girls why science, technology, engineering, arts and math can be a fulfilling life and professional career choice.

Gail Brown

Gail Brown

is an accomplished marketing and sales leader with 20 years of experience within the commercial and government markets. After serving as a marketing executive at Verizon Communications, Gail successfully transitioned to entrepreneurship in 2009 as the founder and CEO of Motiso Group, a 501c3 nonprofit marketing consulting firm. She has earned a Master’s’ Degree from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Commonwealth University. Gail continues research studies at Capella University for the fulfillment of her Ph.D.

Cybelle Long

Cybelle Long

has campaigned fervently for S.T.E.M. programs for more than ten years. She is passionate about empowering and supporting young girls to develop an interest in S.T.E.M. studies and careers. A full-time wife and mother of two beautiful children, Cybelle is an IT Project Manager at Verizon Enterprise Solutions. She has a Master’s Degree in International Management from the University of Maryland and Bachelor’s degrees in French and Business from Ithaca College. In her “spare” time she enjoys yoga, running, and cooking.

Tanya Penny Woods

Tanya Penny Woods

believes cultivating a love for science and a curiosity about the world is essential for producing the engineering, science and financial leaders of the future. Currently Tanya serves as President and CEO of TPW & Associates, a strategy-consulting firm advising clients on financial and business strategies and business process improvement. She also serves on advisory boards for two minority/female-owned technology firms. Previously, Tanya was Senior Vice President of Real Estate for Verizon Services Operations. Throughout her career Tanya has focused on community/service organizations that were aligned with her passion for advancing the growth of girls and women.

Donna Speckhard

is honored to be a Board Member of STEAMd, Inc. because she believes girls should push their boundaries and be given a chance to explore these disciplines without constraints.

Brought up in a diplomatic family and raised overseas, Donna is a public-minded, analytical leader with extensive experience directing emergency response, crisis management, community preparedness, continuity planning, and disaster management programs within high-stress environments.

Leah A. Carpenter

says that serving as a Board Member of STEAMd, Inc. is just one of many avenues through which she fulfills her commitment to the community and future generations. Leah is a New Jersey native who earned both her Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from Rutgers University. Her career in healthcare spans over 30 years with exceptional leadership experience in the acute care setting. She is currently Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Devon Henry

currently works in the field of business analysis. Devon’s true passion is cooking and its unifying ability to bring people from all over the world together around one table. He is a martial–as well as culinary–artist, musician, and gaming enthusiast. He believes social media is progressive, powerful and a potential gateway to global communication and interaction between all ethnicities, cultures and age groups. Devon holds a Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management from Virginia Tech.

Charles Henry

Charles Henry

maintains that it is all of our responsibility to promote, encourage and mentor girls to embrace S.T.E.M. fields to level the playing field and provide opportunities to girls who are currently underserved. He is currently the CEO of Kaptured Visions Consulting. Previously, Charles served as Vice President of Information Technology at Verizon Data Services where he was responsible for program management, software development, testing, and software automation. He is a two-time recipient (2009 & 2010) of the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) for career achievement. Charles holds a Master’s degree in Management Information Technology and a Bachelor’s in Accounting. He currently serves on the University of Virginia MIT Board.
