Our Mission

A non-profit organization led by a team of professionals, STEAMd Inc. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math development) is dedicated to initiating programs designed to create awareness and excitement as well as educate and inspire girls (grades 3 through 12) about the vast array of career opportunities available to women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). In addition to traditional STEM topics (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), STEAMd Inc. programs include Arts because Twenty-first century arts require advanced knowledge of STEM skills.

What is STEAM?

STEM + Art = STEAM development

Today’s technology fueled world belongs to STEAM-savvy innovators. The current economic uncertainty coupled with an open global marketplace threatens America’s young graduates with increased competition for securing jobs. Studies indicate that developing the skills needed to support the world’s desire for new technology can pave the way to secure employment and a prosperous future. Technology depends on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects. Art + Design are critical components of 21st Century products, services, media, and communications.

That’s why we add Art + development to the STEM equation to create STEAMd.

Our Goal

Our goal is to support development and integration of the STEAMd Inc., program into the Loudoun County School system and expand the program to other counties and school systems.

What is STEAMd?

Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math development

What is the difference between STEM and STEAM?

Both acronyms contain science, technology, engineering and math. STEAM incorporates the arts and design and adds a significant component to STEM. The arts include graphic, language arts such technical writing, documentation and help content for technology. It is a blending of the sciences and arts to produce a whole to enhance and the science, technology, engineering and math concepts, experiences and knowledge.

Is the STEAMd Inc. program only for girls?

The STEAMd program is design to inspire, mentor and develop girls. Currently, girls are very underserved in STEM education and careers. Today women only represent 20% of STEM fields in education and only 17% in the workforce. Men exceed women in nearly every science and engineering field. STEM fields are growing rapidly and will increase by 17% by 2020. More women in STEM fields is critical to avoid employee shortages in the workforce as well wall insure that the United States remains a global leader and fierce competitor. STEAMd is working to close this gender gap. STEAMd Inc. asserts that it is essential to develop girls to meet the growing demand. While STEAMd Inc. would never prevent boys from attending and learning about the STEAMd program, the focus is for girls grades 3 through 12.
